After Eve fainted during her wedding to Ed, tests indicated she was suffering from a rare and possibly fatal disorder. Ed asked Rick to come back and take on Eve's case. After a five-year absence, father and son were reunited. Rick operated on Eve, but her condition didn't change. Eve was determined to fight and started taking an experimental drug. It didn't work, and she lapsed into a coma. Ed made the painful decision to pull the plug on her respirator. Lillian (Beth's mother and a nurse at Cedars) helped Rick cover up the crime. Rick confided in Mindy about Eve's death, and she took a business trip to Paris to avoid being questioned about it.

(I'm summarizing the following ... WAY too many paragraphs that don't involve
Nick!-Val)

Nick and Susan Bates, the young woman he was seeing after his divorce from
Mindy, unknowingly became embroiled in the deranged, murderous doings of
Brent Lawrence, masquerading as a woman named Marian Crane (yeah, the same
name as the character Anthony Perkins murdered in "Psycho"!) Susan had
realized that Marian was really a man when Brent/Marian was recovering at
Cedars after being hit by Lucy's car.

(Back to the GL text-Val):

Lucy and Alan-Michael learned she was truly HIV-negative and that the first
test had been altered by a computer hacker. Nick and Susan tried to convince
Lucy that Marian was the one who did it. Marian decided to get rid of Lucy
once and for all, but when she tried to attack her in the shower she found
Susan there instead. Marian knocked Susan unconscious, and Nick found her.
At the hospital, Alex interrupted just as Marian was about to unplug Susan's
respirator.

1996

Susan awoke from her coma and told Frank it was Marian who had attacked her.

She also accepted Nick's proposal. Nick decided to write off Spaulding and left on an extended honeymoon with Susan (February 26).

A wedding section entitled "Two Tries And They Still Couldn't Get It Right":

Nick and Mindy

It was love at first sight when Mindy Lewis spotted Nick McHenry in a New York bar and thought he was Lujack resurrected. Indeed, she discovered he was the son Alexandra Spaulding never knew she had, and Alexandra was no friend of Mindy's. Nevertheless, they fell in love and planned to marry.  Mindy's fervor in protecting Nick from the truth about his parentage led to their wedding-day disaster. Confronted by Alexandra and unable to face Nick with the awful truth that she knew Alexandra was his biological mother, Mindy abandoned a bewildered Nick at the altar and headed off for parts unknown.

It was a testament to the character of Nick that he was not judgmental about Mindy, for he was far from perfect himself. Try as they might to keep their second attempt at a wedding a secret from their formidable adversary, Alexandra found them out and barged right in. This time they managed to say "I do." It was the fourth time around for Mindy, but she still wore white. Says then-executive producer Jill Farren Phelps, "When you're young and you've made some mistakes, and you've finally met the men you're going to spend the rest of your life with, you're entitled to get married in a white dress." The wedding was a success, but the marriage was not. Life in the Spaulding mansion and an attempt to adopt a child proved too much for the couple, and eventually they parted ways.

"A Romance of Hope" (Nick and Susan)

Nick had finally put his marriage to Mindy behind him when Susan Bates arrived at the Springfield Journal looking for work. Nick dismissed her, and Susan assumed it was because she was HIV-positive. After Nick found out about her condition, he apologized profusely and asked her out on a date. Susan didn't want pity, she wanted a job, but Nick persisted and they fell in love. When Susan nearly died at the hands of psycho Brent Lawrence, Nick realized how precious she was to him, and he proposed. They were married at the Spaulding mansion and honeymooned in Europe. Says VI: "I would have to say the love of his life is Susan. They have a commitment to one another and a love that seems to surpass the earthly constrictions of their lives.  They're sharing each other despite her suffering. The selflessness that they are giving each other, that's what love is about."

Other Nick tidbits:

Character analysis from VI: "Nick did succumb and worked at Spaulding for a period of time, but he was doing that more for his mother. Then he lost his whole focus of what he was doing there. Little by little, other things seeped in, including greed and the desire for power."
