Another surprise was about to threaten Alex's stability. While on
business in New York, Mindy was shocked to see a man who was a dead
ringer for Alex's late son, Lujack. Mindy discovered that the man was an
investigative reporter named Nick McHenry. Intrigued when Mindy told of
his resemblance to someone she'd once known, Nick followed her to
Springfield. Stunned upon seeing a picture of Lujack, Nick decided to
stay in town. As he and Mindy grew closer, Nick saw an article on Lujack
that Fletcher (Reade) had written and went to him for answers. Fletcher
knew Nick's parents, who were also journalists. At the airport, Alex
fainted when she spotted Nick.
Alex was having a hard time deciding on a new president for Spaulding.
She finally appointed Vanessa
(Reardon) interim president and confronted Alan-Michael (Spaulding)
about Blake (Cooper), saying he'd better lose
her or forget about ever becoming president of Spaulding. Vanessa
had a left a letter for Alex from Nick, but Alan-Michael had found the
letter and burned it. Alex wondered if Nick was really her son,
especially after hearing that at the moment of Lujack's death, Nick had
been suddenly overwhelmed by grief.
Alex asked Nick if he was
sure Mary McHenry was his natural mother. An irritated Nick fired back,
asking if she was sure Lujack was her natural son. Mindy warned Nick
that Alex wouldn't be satisfied until she owned him heart and soul. Sure
enough, Alex offered Nick
the Springfield Journal. He declined. He was planning to return to New
York, but Alex secretly sabotaged his job there. Mindy resisted telling
Alex that she planned to move to New York with Nick. Alex told her if
she didn't stay away from Nick, all her dirty little secrets would come
out. Mindy told Alex she was leaving town, but when Alex learned where
she was headed, she vowed to follow Mindy's every move. Mindy didn't
tell Billy she was leaving. She went to the airport but just missed
Nick's plane. When Nick got
to New York and learned he no longer had a job thanks to Alex, he headed
back to Springfield, where he found Mindy desperately trying to book a
flight to be with him. The two went to the lighthouse and made love.
When Alex discovered Nick and Mindy had become lovers, she sought out
Billy at the Blue Moon and told him and Nick and everyone else present
about Mindy's affair with Roger. That was it for Fletcher -- he washed
his hands of Alex after her public display. Billy found Roger, beat him
to a pulp and then told Mindy he was writing her off as his daughter.
Mindy was stunned when she
met Lujack look-alike Nick McHenry, and the two fell in love. Alex was
sure he was her son and couldn't tolerate his affair with the woman who
had helped break up her marriage to Roger.
1992
Alex
hired Frank to track down her ex, Eric Luvonaczek, in Paris. Thrilled
when Eric admitted that she had actually given birth to twins, Alex was
convinced that Nick was her son. Nick refused to listen, even when Alex
told him that the doctor named on his birth certificate had been
treating his mother for depression, not a pregnancy. Nick declined to
take a test to disprove he was Alex's son. Eric revealed that he had
lied and that Alex really hadn't had twins, but he left a DNA sample at
Cedars in case Nick ever wanted to have the test done.
Alex's world continued to
fall apart when Nick proposed to Mindy, and Alex turned to Roger
for help in breaking them up. He agreed to do so in exchange for her
help in getting back his empire. Roger told Alex that the key to
separating Nick and Mindy lay in Cambrai. Although no one believed Nick
was her son, Alex made him her heir. Mindy found a picture of Nick's
mother dated just a month before his birth, in which she was obviously
not pregnant.
Mindy quickly erased the
date. When Nick decided to take the DNA test and get Alex off his back,
Mindy broke into the computer at Cedars and changed the results. Roger
discovered what she'd done and told Alex the tests were wrong, but he
didn't rat on Mindy.
Roger's next move was to go to Cambrai to look for Eve Guthrie, a woman
from Nick's past whom Nick thought was dead. Roger found the beautiful
young doctor hiding in a convent and offered to help her escape to
Springfield. Eve ended up going to Springfield on her
own. Nick was stunned when he saw Eve at the Blue Moon and ran straight
into her arms. Roger made sure Mindy witnessed the ex-lovers reunion.
Eve told Nick she was trying to get his best friend Paul, out of a
political prison in Cambrai. Nick was shocked to learn that Eve was
married to Paul. Nick helped Eve rescue Paul, and Paul told Nick that
Eve had only married him to try to save him from jail. Eve decided to
return to Springfield and started working at Cedars.
Miffed
that Roger hadn't stopped Nick and Mindy's wedding plans, Alex
threatened to tell Hart that Roger had swindled the Jessup farm away
from his grandfather. Roger quieted her by telling her about Mindy
changing the DNA results. He also arranged for Nick to be
arrested on his way back from Cambrai so he wouldn't get home in time
for the wedding. Alex then convinced Mindy that Nick had left her
because he'd learned she'd tampered with his DNA test. Mindy left town.
Nick arrived at the church to find Alex, who told him Mindy had changed
the results of the test. Nick refused to believe it, but after he got a
letter from Mindy in which she returned her engagement ring and admitted
to changing the test, Nick finally acknowledged to Alex that she was his
mother. She was elated until he said he couldn't forgive her for all
she'd done. In an attempt to keep Nick out of Spaulding, Alan-Michael
told him that Roger and Alex were behind Mindy's departure. Nick decided
to pursue a job in New York. Once again, Alex made sure he didn't get
it. As
Nick was trying to find his identity and put Mindy behind him, Eve was
waiting patiently. She wanted a
future with Nick but didn't want to hurt Paul. Paul gave Eve a divorce
and his blessing to marry Nick. Meanwhile, Nick learned Mindy was in New
York, but she left before he could talk to her. Nick put Eve off but
rediscovered his feelings for her after seeing her with another man.
Just as he and Eve were making love, Mindy called home.
Jenna Bradshaw (a jewel
thief) went to the Spauldings' home to rob them. There she heard
Alex and Roger plotting to break up Mindy and Nick. Jenna hid the stolen
Spaulding
jewels in Harley's bag, then tipped off a reporter. Despite
Jenna's actions, Harley was officially sworn in as a cop. Instead of
escaping when she had a chance during the blackout, Jenna stayed with
Michelle in a stalled elevator. She was arrested, but after she
blackmailed Alex by threatening to reveal that Alex had been responsible
for Nick missing
his wedding, Alex dropped the charges.
Eve was suspicious after finding Alan-Michael at Musette's hospital bed,
and Nick's investigation into the car bombing linked Musette to
Spaulding.
A tip from Henry (Jenna's father) led Nick to believe that Alan-Michael
could have been behind the bombing. He revealed this to Harley, who told
(her boyfriend) Mallet (who had lost his hearing and was rendered
impotent in the car bombing).
Pierre (who had set the car bomb) showed up in Springfield again, and
Alan-Michael hid him in the Spaulding stables. Nick planted a bug at the
Spaulding mansion to get evidence implicating
Alan-Michael in the bombing. When Harley came to the stables looking for
more evidence (she was a cop), Pierre took her hostage. Nick and Mallet
overheard Alan-Michael arrange to meet Pierre at the airport. They
followed him, and the three teamed up to save Harley. Because of
Alan-Michael's heroism, Harley, Mallet and Nick
decided not to tell Eleni (his wife) of his role in the bombing.
(This was a VERY complicated story in which Nick wasn't the main player,
so I hope I included enough for his role in it to be understood!)
